How to produce a fair comparison
- Use the same device, connection, test service, and test server.
- Stop unrelated downloads, cloud backups, and streaming.
- Run several baseline tests and several VPN tests.
- Use a nearby VPN server unless distance is the variable tested.
- Record the protocol, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and approximate time.
- Compare median results instead of the best single run.
Wi-Fi interference, cellular signal, router processing, server load, routing, and the speed-test service can change between runs. A single result is a diagnostic clue, not a provider-wide benchmark.
Why a VPN can affect speed and ping
- Encryption and packet processing add work.
- The VPN server introduces another network route.
- A distant server generally adds latency.
- Congested servers or local Wi-Fi can limit throughput.
- Routers may process VPN traffic more slowly than ordinary traffic.
- Different protocols recover differently on changing networks.
