Checking your public IP…

Saved “before VPN” IP

Disconnect your VPN, confirm the address on the left, then save it as your baseline.

  1. 1. SaveSave your public IP while the VPN is disconnected.
  2. 2. ConnectConnect the full VPN app to the server you want to test.
  3. 3. CompareReturn here and run the check again in the same browser.

Privacy: this checker does not save the displayed IP in a VPNScout database. Your browser requests the address from the third-party ipify API, and the saved comparison remains only in this tab until you refresh or leave. Read our privacy policy.

What this VPN IP test can tell you

A full-device VPN normally routes supported internet traffic through a VPN server. Websites then see the server's public exit address instead of the public address assigned to your connection by an internet provider.

If the two addresses differ, this browser request exited through a different public address. That is a useful first check, but it is not a complete leak test and does not establish who operates either address.

What an IP change does not prove

  • That every application on the device uses the VPN tunnel.
  • That IPv4 and IPv6 traffic follow the same route.
  • That DNS or WebRTC cannot reveal unexpected information.
  • That the VPN provider keeps no logs.
  • That websites cannot identify an account, cookie, or device.
  • That GPS or browser location permission has changed.

If your IP address does not change

  1. Confirm that you connected through the provider's full VPN application, not only a browser extension.
  2. Check split-tunneling settings and make sure this browser is not excluded from the VPN.
  3. Disconnect, reconnect to a different server, and run the test again.
  4. Temporarily close another consumer VPN, manual proxy, or VPN-style filtering app that could control the route.
  5. Update the VPN application and use its automatic or recommended protocol before changing advanced network settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does a changed IP prove that my VPN is fully working?

No. It shows that this browser request used a different public exit address. DNS requests, IPv6, WebRTC, split-tunneled apps, and traffic outside the browser require separate checks.

Why is my IP unchanged while the VPN says connected?

Common causes include split tunneling excluding the browser, testing through a browser-only extension from another app, a stale tunnel, competing VPN or proxy software, or a routing problem.

Should my local 192.168 address change?

Usually not. Addresses such as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x identify devices inside a local network. This tool checks the public address visible to an internet service.

How this tool was prepared: VPNScout designed the comparison flow to make one narrow check: whether the public address returned to this browser changed. The tool uses ipify's universal IPv4/IPv6 endpoint and deliberately avoids claiming that one result proves complete VPN protection. Last reviewed July 30, 2026.
