A VPN and an eSIM are not alternatives. An eSIM connects a compatible device to a mobile carrier, while a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel over an existing internet connection. Travelers may use an eSIM for affordable mobile data and a VPN for connection privacy and a different public IP.
You can use either one independently, but a VPN cannot replace cellular service and an eSIM does not automatically provide VPN protection. Whether you need both depends on how you connect, the networks you trust, the data plan you have, and what you want to protect.

An eSIM is an embedded, programmable SIM capability in a supported phone, tablet, watch, or computer. Instead of inserting a removable card, you download or activate a carrier profile. That profile lets the device register with the carrier and use the services included in the plan.
For international travel, an eSIM may provide local or regional mobile data without replacing a physical home SIM. Supported iPhones can store multiple eSIM profiles and, on compatible models, keep two eSIMs active. Availability depends on the device, carrier, destination, and regional rules.
A VPN routes supported traffic from your device through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. Websites and apps reached through that tunnel usually see the VPN server's public IP rather than the carrier or Wi-Fi network's public IP.
The local network can still observe connection timing, data volume, and that traffic is going to VPN infrastructure in many cases. The VPN provider becomes an important trust point, and a VPN does not hide activity from a service you sign into.
The simplest way to understand the comparison is that an eSIM provides a road, while a VPN adds a protected route over that road.
Without an active eSIM, physical SIM, Wi-Fi, or wired connection, a VPN has no internet path to use. Without a VPN, the eSIM can still provide internet access, but traffic is handled directly through the carrier and ordinary application encryption.
When both are active, the path looks like this:

The decision is not about buying every security product. It is about identifying two separate needs: How will I get online? and How do I want that connection routed and protected?
An eSIM is not inherently anonymous. The carrier normally has subscriber or purchase information and can measure data usage. The eSIM profile is primarily an access credential for the mobile network.
A VPN can limit what that carrier sees about traffic inside the tunnel, but the carrier still carries the encrypted data and can observe volume, timing, and the connection to VPN infrastructure. The VPN provider may be able to observe connection metadata or traffic leaving its servers, depending on the service, protocol, and destination encryption.
Neither product hides activity from accounts you sign into. Google, a social platform, or a retailer can associate activity with your account even when the IP changes. Neither product replaces multifactor authentication, software updates, HTTPS, or careful handling of links and downloads.
An eSIM carrier assigns the connection a public or carrier-grade NAT address. That IP may appear in the destination country, the provider's home country, or a regional routing location. You generally cannot select it as you would select a VPN server.
A VPN lets you choose from locations offered by the provider. Protected services normally see the VPN exit IP, but they may still use:

An eSIM plan charges for connectivity according to its allowance, duration, destination coverage, and fair-use terms. A VPN subscription charges for access to the VPN service. Buying one does not pay for the other unless a specific bundle explicitly includes both.
When a VPN runs over an eSIM, the tunnel consumes the eSIM's data and adds some protocol overhead. Turning on a VPN does not make mobile data free or unlimited. Video quality, cloud backups, app updates, and hotspot clients usually have a larger effect on total usage than tunnel overhead.

An eSIM does not protect a Wi-Fi connection because it is not the active network path while the phone uses Wi-Fi. A configured VPN can protect supported traffic on either Wi-Fi or cellular data.
On hotel or airport Wi-Fi, first verify the network name and complete its legitimate captive portal. Then connect the VPN and confirm that the public IP changes.
