If your VPN disconnects only after the phone screen turns off, start with the VPN app's Auto-connect setting and Android background battery controls, then test Wi-Fi-to-mobile transitions, another protocol, and the current app version. On Android, battery optimization and manufacturer sleeping-app features can restrict background operation. On iPhone, check the VPN provider's Auto-connect or on-demand behavior, update the VPN profile, and use Low Power Mode only as a diagnostic clue—not as proof of the cause.
Do not disable every battery or security control at once. Exempting an app from optimization can increase battery use, and turning off a kill switch can allow traffic outside the VPN. Make one reversible change, lock the phone for a fixed interval, and record the result.
Run a repeatable test before changing settings:
A VPN icon disappearing while the phone is locked, a disconnect notification, or the normal ISP IP appearing after unlock supports a real tunnel drop. An app merely taking a few seconds to refresh may instead be a stale session or network handoff.

Auto-connect tells a supported VPN app when to establish or restore its tunnel. Review whether it is configured for all networks, Wi-Fi only, or mobile data only. A setting limited to Wi-Fi can look like a screen-off problem when the phone silently changes to cellular.
Choose the policy that matches your privacy needs. Excluding a home or trusted network means the VPN may remain disconnected there by design. After changing Auto-connect, disconnect manually, reconnect, and repeat the lock test.
Android includes an Always-on VPN option for supported configurations. Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN, tap the settings control beside the VPN, and review Always-on VPN. Menu names differ across phone brands and Android versions, and some app-managed VPNs expose the equivalent option inside the app instead.
Android may also offer Block connections without VPN. This can prevent unprotected traffic if the tunnel stops, but it can make the phone appear to have no internet until the VPN reconnects. That is expected protective behavior, not necessarily a second fault.
Do not remove a work or school VPN profile or change administrator-enforced settings without authorization.
Android and phone manufacturers can reduce background activity to extend battery life. On recent Pixel phones, the path commonly starts at Settings > Apps > See all apps > your VPN app > App battery usage > Allow background usage. Other devices may use labels such as Unrestricted, Optimized, Background activity, or Battery optimization.
Start with the VPN provider's documented recommendation for your exact phone and app version. If the disconnect continues, briefly test a less restrictive setting. Exempting the VPN app can increase battery consumption, so compare both stability and battery use over a normal day.
Do not broadly disable Adaptive Battery or optimization for every app. The goal is a targeted test for the VPN application.
Samsung documents that sleeping apps have limited background activity and deep-sleeping apps do not run in the background. Open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits on supported Galaxy devices, then check Sleeping apps, Deep sleeping apps, and Never sleeping apps.
Remove the VPN from Sleeping and Deep sleeping lists. If the problem persists, add it to Never sleeping apps for a controlled test. Samsung warns that apps exempted from sleeping can use more battery in the background. Names and paths vary by One UI version and region.
Similar controls exist on some Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Huawei, and other Android phones. Use the manufacturer and VPN provider's current documentation instead of copying a path written for a different device.
Battery-saving modes can restrict background activity, network use, performance, and location services. Turn the mode off temporarily, reconnect the VPN, and run the same two-, five-, and fifteen-minute lock tests.
If this fixes the disconnect, look for an app-specific exception or adjust the power-saving schedule. Leaving all power-saving features disabled may not be necessary. Record the battery cost before deciding on a permanent setting.
Apple says Low Power Mode reduces background activity and turns off Background App Refresh. That makes it a reasonable diagnostic variable, but it does not establish that Low Power Mode is responsible for every VPN disconnect.
Open Settings > Battery and temporarily turn Low Power Mode off. Reconnect the VPN and repeat the lock test. If stability improves consistently, update the VPN app and iOS, review the provider's iPhone support, and share the reproducible result with the provider.
Do not treat Background App Refresh as a universal VPN tunnel switch. iOS VPN behavior depends on the VPN configuration, protocol, and provider app, not just whether an app refreshes content in the background.
Open the VPN provider's app and check Auto-connect, trusted Wi-Fi, or equivalent connection settings. Then review Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for profiles you recognize. A damaged or outdated VPN configuration can sometimes reconnect poorly after sleep or a network change.
Use the provider's Reset VPN profile option if available. Otherwise, confirm your login and settings before removing and reinstalling the official app. Approve the VPN configuration prompt again and test default settings before restoring custom DNS or other advanced options.
Do not delete employer, school, security, or device-management profiles without authorization.
Phones may reduce Wi-Fi activity while locked, move between access points, or switch to cellular when signal quality falls. A tunnel that does not recover cleanly can appear to be killed by the screen even though the real trigger is network handoff.
Run three tests:

A congested server or protocol that handles network changes poorly can fail when the phone wakes or switches interfaces. Start with the provider's Automatic or recommended protocol, then test other maintained protocols one at a time.
Connect to a nearby server for the stability test. A distant server adds latency and more opportunities for an unstable mobile link to time out. If only one server fails, report its location or identifier to the provider.
Avoid obsolete VPN protocols and configuration files from unofficial websites. A successful connection is not enough if the method is no longer considered secure.
Data Saver or manufacturer-specific background-data limits can restrict an app while the screen is off. Open the VPN app's mobile-data settings and confirm it has the background or unrestricted-data access recommended by the provider.
Test with Data Saver off, then create the narrowest exception if that solves the issue. Remember that allowing unrestricted background data can increase mobile-data and battery use.
Android and iOS generally use one active device VPN configuration at a time. Ad blockers, firewalls, antivirus web filters, DNS privacy tools, work profiles, and another commercial VPN can create competing routes or profiles.
Disconnect other consumer VPN-style apps during the test. Do not remove a managed profile. If two security products conflict, update both and follow their official compatibility instructions rather than permanently disabling protection.
A network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN profiles, Bluetooth pairings, and mobile settings. Record what you need before using it.
A kill switch is intended to prevent traffic from leaving through the ordinary connection when the VPN drops. On Android, Block connections without VPN serves a related purpose at the operating-system level.
During diagnosis, distinguish these outcomes:
Disable a kill switch only briefly if the provider explicitly recommends that diagnostic step. Restore it afterward if leak prevention is part of your setup.

A single successful two-minute test is useful but not conclusive. Repeat the test after a longer idle period and after a network transition.
Contact the VPN provider when the problem survives app and OS updates, Auto-connect checks, a targeted battery exception, several servers, multiple supported protocols, and tests on two networks.

The VPN app may be restricted by Android battery optimization, manufacturer sleeping-app controls, Data Saver, a power-saving mode, network handoff, or an outdated VPN profile. Auto-connect may also be limited to only one network type.
A properly configured mobile VPN is generally intended to protect traffic while the device is locked, subject to the operating system, app, connection policy, and network conditions. Confirm with a timed public-IP and status test.
