A VPN tunnel depends on the connection underneath it. Weak Wi-Fi, a congested router, poor cellular coverage, carrier maintenance, or a captive portal can interrupt the tunnel. The VPN may be the first app to show the problem because it must maintain a continuous connection to its server.
Android can move between Wi-Fi and mobile data when you leave a building, lose signal, or use an adaptive-connectivity feature. The phone's public address and route change during that handover, so the VPN may need to establish a new tunnel. A short reconnect is normal; repeated failures are not.
Android uses power-management systems such as Doze, App Standby, and per-app background restrictions. Google documents that restricted apps may be prevented from running normally in the background. VPN apps rely on Android networking services, and compatibility bugs can appear after either the operating system or the app changes. Install the latest stable Android update offered for the phone and update the VPN through Google Play or the provider's verified distribution channel.

Choose a specific nearby country or city instead of repeatedly using the same automatic selection. Test two or three locations, allowing each connection enough time to settle.
A nearby server is a sensible first choice because shorter routes often reduce latency, but it is not a guarantee. If one server disconnects and several others remain stable, keep using a working server and report the failing location to the provider.
Start with the provider's Automatic or recommended option. If the problem continues, test each supported protocol individually. Common options may include WireGuard-based protocols, OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, or a provider-specific protocol.
There is no universally best protocol for every Android phone and network. Record which combination of protocol and network stays connected rather than relying on a single speed test.
This step is especially important if the VPN disconnects when the screen turns off or after the phone has been idle.
Open Settings > Apps, select the VPN app, and look for Battery, App battery usage, or Background usage. Confirm that the app is not set to Restricted. On some phones, choosing Unrestricted or Allow background activity may improve tunnel stability, but it can use more battery.

Change only the VPN app's setting first. Do not disable all battery optimization across the phone. If unrestricted operation does not change the result, restore the previous setting.

Search Android Settings for VPN, tap the settings icon beside the selected service, and review Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. Google documents that always-on VPN can restart a supported VPN, while blocking prevents traffic from bypassing it.
Temporarily disabling blocking can help determine whether the tunnel is failing while the kill switch is correctly stopping unprotected traffic. During that test, ordinary traffic may leave through the regular connection, so avoid sensitive activity and restore the protection afterward if you rely on it.

Conflicting rules can cause repeated connect-and-disconnect cycles. For example, Android may require the VPN on every network while the app treats the current Wi-Fi network as trusted and tries to pause.
Disconnect and fully close any second VPN app. Review old VPN profiles under Android Settings and remove only profiles you recognize and no longer use.
Temporarily test without third-party firewall, antivirus web protection, ad-blocking VPN, custom DNS, or Private DNS. If stability returns, update both products and check their official compatibility instructions instead of leaving security software permanently disabled.
A managed work or school profile may enforce its own VPN. Do not remove an organizational profile or change its network policy without authorization; contact the administrator.
A stale Android VPN profile or damaged app data can cause repeated reconnects.
Clearing an app's storage also resets it, but it signs you out and removes its local settings. Do not clear data unless you are prepared to configure the app again.
A network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, VPN profiles, and mobile or APN configuration. The exact effect varies by phone, so read the confirmation screen and save anything you need first.
Search Settings for Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth or Reset network settings. Do not choose an option that erases all phone content, and do not delete an eSIM merely to troubleshoot a VPN. After the reset, restart the phone, restore the normal network, and reinstall or authorize the VPN.
Use only APN values supplied by the mobile carrier. Random APN settings copied from a forum can disable service or create billing problems.

Check the VPN app's battery status, background activity, sleeping-app list, and Data Saver access. Test once with the phone connected to power. Confirm that cellular internet works without the VPN and that the VPN app can use mobile and background data. Set auto-connect to include mobile networks, then test another protocol. A short reconnect during the route change can be normal, but the app should recover.
Try a different server and protocol, then test on a second network. Frequent regular intervals may point to router session limits, a carrier route, app power management, or competing auto-connect rules. Note the exact interval and send it with diagnostic logs to support.
This is usually a routing, DNS, kill-switch, filtering, or server issue rather than a true disconnect. Try another server and protocol first, then temporarily return Private DNS and custom DNS to their previous automatic settings for diagnosis.
Review split tunneling and the affected app's own network permissions. Some banking, streaming, workplace, and local-device apps restrict VPN connections or require access to the local network. Excluding an app from the VPN reduces its tunnel protection, so make that choice only when you understand the tradeoff.
Contact the VPN provider when the app disconnects across multiple networks, phones, servers, and protocols; when it shows a repeatable error; or when the problem began immediately after an app update. Include the phone model, Android version, VPN app version, network type, selected protocol, approximate time, and steps that reproduce the failure.
Contact the mobile carrier or internet provider when ordinary connectivity drops without the VPN, the problem affects multiple devices on the same network, mobile service cannot register, or the VPN works everywhere except one provider's network.
Diagnostic logs may contain technical device and connection information. Send them only through the provider's verified support channel and do not publish them in a public forum.
