If Google still shows your real or previous location while a VPN is connected, that does not automatically mean the VPN is leaking your IP address. A VPN changes the public network address used by traffic routed through its tunnel. Google can also use device location, browser or app permission, a recent location stored in a cookie, past activity, and account settings. First confirm that your public IP actually changed, then use the location label beneath Google Search results to identify the signal Google used.
Google says it may use a device location from the last time Google was used and may keep a website location in a cookie for up to six hours. That makes an old city after connecting a VPN possible even when the new VPN IP is working correctly.

A VPN is a network privacy tool, not a GPS spoofer. If a search page uses device location with your permission, it can show the nearby area even while websites see the VPN server's public IP. Conversely, an inaccurate city beside a changed IP can be a geolocation-database issue rather than a leak.
Use a controlled test before changing permissions:
If the exact ISP address remains visible, follow our VPN connected but IP address not changing guide. Check split tunneling, browser-only extensions, IPv6, competing VPNs, and routing. If the public IP changed, the tunnel is likely working for that test even if Google still recognizes your area.
Scroll to the bottom of a Google results page and inspect how the location was determined. The wording can vary by device and region, but Google documents signals including:
This label is more useful than guessing. Apply the matching fix below, then open a new search rather than repeatedly refreshing an old result.
On a phone, the Google app, Chrome, Safari, or another browser may be allowed to use the device's precise or approximate location. That location can come from GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile towers, and other device signals. A VPN does not alter it.
Open Settings > Location > App permissions and select the Google app or browser you use. Choose the level of access that matches your needs. In Chrome, also open google.com, tap the site information control, and review the site's Location permission. Android and browser menu names can vary by version and manufacturer.
Blocking location can reduce the accuracy of nearby results, directions, weather, and emergency-related features. Change the permission only if that tradeoff matches your goal.
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select the Google app or browser, and review its access and Precise Location setting. For Safari websites, review website location access as well. If you depend on navigation or local recommendations, consider limiting permission for the specific app rather than disabling Location Services for the entire device.
Device location may be enabled generally while google.com has its own permission. Chrome explains that, when a user allows a site to access location, the browser can obtain an estimate from Google Location Services and share it with that site.
In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location, or use the site controls beside the address bar to change permission for google.com. Other browsers provide a similar per-site control. Close all Google tabs, reconnect the VPN, and open a new private window for the test.
Do not install a random location-changing extension. Extensions with access to browsing data can create a larger privacy problem than the location label you are trying to diagnose.
Google documents that it may store a recent device location in a cookie that expires after six hours so Search can return results quickly. Reconnecting the VPN does not automatically erase that site data.
Start with the least disruptive test: open a private window, remain signed out, and search again. If the old location disappears, site data or account personalization was probably involved. You can then clear cookies and stored data for Google specifically rather than deleting all browser data.
Clearing site data can sign you out, remove preferences, and interrupt account recovery or security checks. Make sure you can sign back in before doing it.
Searches for nearby businesses, directions, weather, sports, or local news can help Google infer a useful area. The bottom-of-results message may say the location is based on past activity.
Compare three tests:
If only the signed-in result uses the familiar area, review Google Account activity and Search personalization controls. Do not delete useful account history solely to make a VPN test look different. The technical privacy question is whether the public IP changed; personalization is a separate account choice.
Google states that its app may use location from the last time it was used so it can return results quickly. An app left open while the network changed may also retain an earlier session.
Force-close the Google app, connect the VPN first, and then reopen the app. On Android, clear the app cache before considering stored data. On iPhone, restart the app and device; reinstall only after simpler checks. Recheck the explanation under Search results.
IP-location databases are estimates. A VPN server can be physically located in one place while a database maps its address to a nearby city, a provider's registered office, or an earlier owner. Different websites may disagree.
Compare the same connected public IP on two or three reputable lookup services. If the address belongs to the VPN provider but one service reports the wrong city, try another server and report the mismatch to the VPN provider or lookup database. Repeatedly clearing cookies will not repair an external IP database.
Split tunneling can send selected apps outside the VPN. A browser, Google app, or search domain excluded from the tunnel will intentionally use the ordinary internet address.
Open the VPN's Split tunneling, Bypass VPN, or Excluded apps settings. Temporarily return the list to default, reconnect, and repeat the IP test in the affected browser or app. If the browser works but the Google app does not, read our guide to a VPN working in a browser but not other apps.
A VPN extension usually protects supported traffic inside that browser. It does not change GPS and normally does not route the Google mobile app, Maps, another browser, or every desktop program.
Use the provider's official full-device app when you need system-wide routing. While diagnosing, avoid running the browser extension and full app with different server locations. If you intentionally use only an extension, test inside that protected browser and make sure google.com is not excluded.
Some connections have public IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously. A changed IPv4 beside an ISP-provided IPv6 deserves investigation. WebRTC can also reveal network address information, although a private local address is not the same as exposing the public ISP address.
Test public IPv4, public IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC separately. Update the VPN, try another maintained protocol, and contact the provider if the pre-VPN public address appears. Do not permanently disable IPv6 or browser communication features as your first fix; that can hide the symptom or break other services.
Change one variable at a time. This preserves evidence and avoids weakening several privacy controls without knowing which change mattered.

Google can use device location permission, browser or website permission, a recent location cookie, past activity, account information, and the VPN IP's approximate location. A VPN changes the routed public IP, not every location signal.
Not necessarily. Compare the exact public IPv4 and IPv6 before and after connecting. If they changed to addresses associated with the VPN, a familiar Google location may come from another signal.
A standard VPN does not change GPS. Be cautious with location-spoofing apps and do not use them to falsify identity, payment, residency, or eligibility information.

A correct diagnosis separates network location from device and account location. That lets you improve privacy without deleting unrelated data, disabling useful safety features, or mistaking a remembered city for a VPN failure.
